As I sat here pondering what product to write about. I decided to go ahead and eat that huge pomegranate that my friend Adam left at my apt during his visit. I remember him telling me how to get all those wonderful, juicy, red garnet seeds out with ease.
The trick is to fill up a huge bowl with water, cut the pomegranate in fours and submerse them in the water while you gently separate the seeds. The skins or “astringent membranes”, (the white, spongy stuff) will float to the top. Remove the skins and pour the bowl into a strainer. You now have a yummy bowl of pomegranate seeds! I highly recommend buying a whole pomegranate rather than the pre packaged seeds. It’s fresh and much more satisfying!
So, this got me thinking. What are the skin benefits of this superfood? Well, besides helping to lower cholesterol, providing antioxidants that fight off cancer-causing free radicals, and being loaded with fiber, this fruit has endless benefits for the body! I read so much about how awesome this fruit is for us that I am now convinced to eat it everyday!
After much searching and reading, the two things that kept popping up were collagen production and sun damage protection, as well as cell regeneration, anti-aging and anti-inflamatory. This is all wonderful news for our skin! The real benefits are in the skin of the pomegranate and I found a great raw food site that explains it’s uses and how to prepare it here.
I also discovered that many beauty products use pomegranate oil as a main ingredient because of it’s rare Omega 5 essential fatty acid known as Punicic Acid which is a potent antioxidant and natural phytoestrogen (plant-based estrogen). I will be on the lookout to try some of these products for future posts!
Now get out to your local grocery store to stock up on this awesome superfood with beautiful garnet colored jewels called pomegranate! Please try to buy organic!
